Greenberg, Suzanne. An 'A' for Effort: How Grading Policies Shape Courses. Leahy, Anna, Ed. Power and Identity in the Creative Writing Classroom.

Greenberg speaks of her experiences trying to create a "fair" grading system for a creative writing class. She didn't want to emphasize "talent" in her class, so she emphasized exercises, small group participation, logbooks, reviews of assigned reading, writing and revision, and summary comments on other students' writing. All of these are valid activities in creative writing classes, but Greenberg said she became so specific with these criteria, that the students became too focused on the grades and not enough on the creative process. So she decided to emphasize portfolio work, so grading was not the focus of the class.
